Bharat Sangeet Utsav 2011

The seventh edition of Bharat Sangeet Utsav, which is music portal Carnatica’s annual musical extravaganza, will be featuring popular artistes and budding talent.

The ongoing festival, which started October 29, is being held at Narada Gana Sabha and will end on November 7. It began with an inaugural concert by Sudha Ragunathan, with the unique theme ‘Mile Sur Mera Tumhara - A Confluence of Indian Musical Styles’.

Carnatic music veterans S. Sowmya, Nithyasree Mahadevan, Malladi Brothers, Prof T N Krishnan, T V Sankaranarayanan, Neyveli Santhanagopalan, Sanjay Subrahmanyan, Vijay Siva, Priya Sisters, R K Srikantan, Ranjani-Gayathri and P Unnikrishnan will perform at the fest.

It will also feature interesting combinations like flute wizard Shashank with Hindustani maestro Sanjeev Abhyankar; Chitravina Ravikiran with Lalgudi G J R Krishnan (duet concert). London-based musician Dr Jyotsna Srikanth will present ‘Fusion Dreams.'

There will be lively performances by the Manganiyars from Rajasthan and Hindustani vocalist Shubha Mudgal.

The young group featured in the afternoon slots include first-time combinations such as V. Shankaranarayanan and Shaunak Abhisheki, V R Dileep Kumar and G Ravikiran, K Gayathri and Sriranjani Santhanagopalan, Carnatic Idol winners Bharat Sundar and R Raghavendra, Vidya Kalyanaraman and Amritha Murali, Shertalai Ranganatha Sharma and Kunnakudy Balamuralikrishna and Nisha Rajagopal and Saketharaman.

On the final day, Preethi Seth, Manasi Prasad and Savitha Sreeram will jointly present a thematic concert based on regional Indian music forms. There will also be a ‘katha-kutcheri’, a combination of Harikatha and Carnatic music by B. Suchitra and Bharathi Ramasubban.

The winners of the TV show ‘Hariyudan Naan’ will also be performing, introduced by Subhasree Thanikachalam. About 50 per cent seats for each day’s events will be free on a first-come-first-served basis, without reservation.

Carnatica is a music portal founded by vocalists K N Shashikiran and S Sowmya.
