The Puducherry Municipal Services Pvt Ltd (PMSPL), India’s first truly integrated solid waste management service provider, has launched the ‘Right to a Clean Neighbourhood’ campaign in Puducherry, Oulgaret municipalities and Villianur and Ariankuppam commune panchayats under the Urban Agglomeration of Puducherry.
The campaign is aimed at educating the common man on the street about his right to a clean neighbourhood and how he can enjoy the same by actively participating in the initiative by ensuring that he throws garbage into the bins placed at street corners or to keep the waste generated carefully packed in bags and handing them over to the PMSPL community workforce who come every day to pick it up from their doorsteps.
People have a right to live in a clean, safe environment. Shopkeepers, individuals and households also have a responsibility to protect their local environment, and ensure that their waste does not create a health problem for neighbours. By placing the bins at various locations in the city, PMSPL encourages people to dispose the waste in an environment-friendly way and expects their cooperation to keep the city clean.
"We are continually leveraging best practices to provide high-quality integrated solid waste management services in Puducherry and the adjoining municipalities and commune panchayats,” said Lt. Col (Retd) C P Prem Vas, COO, PMSPL.
He adds, “Our ‘Right to Clean Neighbourhood’ awareness campaigns being run concurrently on the nuances of segregation of the waste across the region, is sure to help people actively participate in the initiative. We are proud to have been part of this excellent initiative and believe the initiative helps reduce the waste which scatters on the roadsides of Puducherry."
Community members’ responsibilities in managing their waste include:
- Keeping their area free of rubbish that is likely to attract or shelter vermin
- Securing rubbish bins against street dogs, cats, rats and other domestic animals
- Making their bins available for regular collection
- Cleaning up waste regularly to prevent flies breeding
- Taking excess household waste to the waste bin
- Not illegally dumping waste, especially hazardous waste
