Jaya to become CM Monday

Chennai, May 15: AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa, having won the election with a stunning performance, is to be sworn in chief minister of Tamil Nadu tomorrow.

The swearing-in ceremony is to be held at the Madras University Centenary Hall tomorrow afternoon with Governor Surjit Singh Barnala administering the oath of office and secrecy to the new chief minister.

Jayalalithaa (63) was elected the leader of the AIADMK legislature party by the 147 newly-elected MLAs of her party at a meeting held this morning at the party headquarters in Lloyds Road.

As the party has emerged as the single largest party in Tamil Nadu in the 2011 Assembly polls, it decided to stake claim to form the government.

The AIADMK general secretary then met Barnala at Raj Bhavan and staked her claim. The Governor accepted her claim and invited her to form the government.

Raj Bhavan sources said the swearing-in would take place 12.15 p.m.

Jayalalithaa was sworn in chief minister for the first time in 1991 at the Centenary Hall.
