Thangkabalu puts in papers

Chennai, May 14: A day after the Congress was routed in the Tamil Nadu Assembly polls, TNCC president K V Thangkabalu has announced his resignation from the post, owning moral responsibility for the defeat.

Thangkabalu said he would send his resignation letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and general secretary.

The Congress had secured 63 seats after some tough bargaining with the DMK but managed to win only 5 seats in the 2011 Assembly elections.

Thangkabalu lost to AIADMK’s R Rajalakshmi in Mylapore constituency. He had earlier fielded his wife Jayanthi for the constituency in the teeth of stiff opposition from his cadres. When her papers were not found in order by the returning officer, he became the official candidate as he was the dummy candidate for the seat. The cadres protest against him continued through the month and continued even after the results were announced yesterday.
