Puducherry, February 15th
Hundreds of fishermen and fisherwomen from around 18 coastal villages in Puducherry observed a nine-hour long fast from 8 am here today to urge the territorial government to speed up relief to the fishermen who are suffering from Thane cyclone last year. Although Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy had announced that relief amount totalling Rs 161 crores would be distributed to the cyclone-hit fishermen, no action had been taken so far, the protestors said. The fishermen, who fasted near the Swadeshi cotton mills here, raised slogans urging the administration to expedite the distribution of relief amount so that they can resume normal life.
